Client Work: No Peak Hours

Client Work is a section dedicated to recent client projects.

I was recently approached to do some writing for Brooklyn label No Peak Hours, a relatively new imprint run by Katelyn M. that focuses on dancefloor-inspired music for all hours.

Note: the writing below is not capitalized, in keeping with the client’s preferences 😉

Various artists: w/ (2022)

a collection of tracks originating as live home studio sessions between nph headmistress katelyn and several friends, “w/” is a relational exercise involving music as a point of connection for friendship and creative exploration. the monikers found on this compilation – two moms, g.b., and babs – each represent a duo of katelyn plus one collaborator.

recorded in brooklyn in the fall and winter of 2021, these duets were performed using modular synthesizers and drum machines in a real-time improvisational approach centered around the home studio as an interactive visiting place. collaborators worked from a set of patches by katelyn, assigning their own compositional ideas, with final structures later formed by katelyn in an indirect process of call and response.

the outcome is a group of sonically cohesive yet distinctive tracks: the dark, muted bass of two moms’ “lemon” gives way to reverie-inducing percussive waves and clouds of distortion; g.b.’s “bicycle,” with a subdued acid line and airy kick at its center, descends like softly smoldering embers as its airy blown-out lead slowly gathers shape; and babs’ “chicken” is punchy and hypnotic, pairing a morphing bass melody with distorted and dreamy four-to-the-floor rhythms like a 90s midwest mirage.
